How to keep kids safer on school-issued devices
Simple steps for average parents
As many of you may remember, one of my six tech goals for 2025 was to better understand my children’s school-issued laptops. While (excellent!) articles like this one and this one convinced me it was important, those same articles left me unsure what I could actually do about my concerns as an average parent.
I’m so grateful this newsletter connected me with another average parent: Sarah Geary, a mom to two girls who lives in my same school district. She shares my passion for raising kids with a low-screen lifestyle and particularly for protecting kids from the harms of school-issued devices. After learning about the advocacy she’d doggedly pursued in our own district, I asked if she’d be willing to share her experience with the TCF community.
Happily, she was! If you’ve ever wondered how you might create a safer digital experience for your kids while they’re at school, I hope the simple, clear, empowering steps she shares below are a gift. I know they have been to me.
Sarah, take it away!
