One of the best posts you've written! I resonate so much. My favorite place on Earth was my grandparents' difficult-to-get-to cottage on the lake and my first real grief in life was when they sold it. We didn't go back for years but have now decided to make it a priority to return (to a rented house) and it's one of my favorite traditions. I can mark time by the summer weeks spent there, can recall novels that impacted me most (read in a hammock in the shade, of course), heartbreaks I was going through, conversations with extended family that still impact me. I dream of buying back the cottage one day. You captured my feelings so well!

This is one of my favorite posts you’ve ever written. So well captured. My favorite memories as a kid were the same trips taken to see family, with simple things that filled our souls with wonder. My grandfather’s tomatoes in his garden, my grandmother’s “homemade” spice cake (I found out many years later it was a Betty Crocker box mix), and wrestling with my cousins in the living room. We’d return year after year - the same but different. Thank you for writing this.
