The best gift you can give your siblings
On negative externalities and cousin crews
I recently listened to a favorite podcaster explain how her family has handled devices for their three children.1 For the most part, I really loved the episode, and nodded along as she shared what has worked: delaying smartphones until high school, a strict no-phones-in-the-bedroom policy, modeling human-focused phone behavior, teaching her kids about attention and the algorithm.
There was one part of the episode, however, that stuck in my craw.
