A popular misconception about those who value low-screen living is that what we’re actually aiming for is no-screen living. At least for John and me, that’s not the case.
Screens provide plenty of utility and enjoyment in my life: I work on them, I write on them, I make plans with friends and buy Christmas presents and check a shared grocery list on them. And, most pertinently for today’s post, we watch shows on them.
Because sometimes, after a full day of parenting and working and cooking and exercising and keeping track of allthethings, taking an early shower, putting on your pajamas, dimming the lights, and cozying up on the sofa with a soft blanket to be entertained is darn near perfection.
And there are amazing television shows to be watched! Stories that thrill, that make laugh until you cry or just straight-up cry. Acting that is pitch-perfect, scenes and characters that you think about for years afterward. It’s a privilege to delight in the talents of others and to watch for glimmers of truth, beauty, and goodness.
Of course, like all good things (especially good technology things), it’s easy for TV watching to go off the rails. Over time, John and I have figured out a few house rules that help us to keep it a positive part of our lives.
