50+ screen-free winter activities for kids
When it's dark and cold, consult the winter boredom list
If you, like John, suffer from a mild form of Seasonal Affective Disorder, good news: we’ve already passed the shortest, darkest day of the year. Like, at this point you can hardly see it in the rearview mirror! Here in North Carolina, our sunset has shifted from 5:01pm1 in November to 5:40pm here at the end of January.
Depending on where you live, though, the days still might feel long and cold, with the promise of more cold and dark evenings for many weeks to come. Perhaps by this point in the winter, your go-to after school and evening activities feel as tired as the dingy snow outside.
Enter today’s post — a round-up of 50+ screen-free activities for kids of all ages to get you through the last few weeks of winter. I’ve divided them into two categories: those which require some level of parental supervision/participation (especially for younger kids), and those you can turn kids loose on at any age. These have all been tried, tested, and approved in our house. Let’s do it!
